ParentABLE Documentary

Check out what students, teachers and subject matter experts say about ParentABLE, our course for high schoolers, in this impactful 12-minute film.

What is ParentABLE?

ParentABLE started as a student-driven initiative at Evanston Township High school in Illinois. A group of students from the C.A.R.E. Club (Child Abuse Recognition Evanston) advocated for parenting and caregiving education to be included in the wellness course required for graduation, and they succeeded. Their efforts led to constituent legislation that is piloting parenting education in high schools throughout the state of Illinois. The ParentABLE parenting/caregiver unit provides high school students with awareness, knowledge, and skills to care for and encourage the physical, mental and emotional development of children.

ParenTeach Institute trains high school educators how to deliver ParentABLE’s 6.5-hour Positive Parenting and Caregiving curriculum to their students, helping them develop a foundational understanding of positive parenting and caregiving practices.

ParentABLE is now available in both English and Spanish!

The ParentABLE curriculum includes:

  • Information about the effects of unintentional harmful parenting
  • The consequences of adverse childhood experiences
  • The power of resilience and positive parenting and caregiving.

The 6.5-hour curriculum aims to:

  • Reduce child abuse and neglect rates
  • Break the cycle of unintentional harmful parenting
  • Promotes Early Relational Health
  • Create a level of comfort with seeking future parenting and caregiving resources and support
  • Increase students’ Social Emotional Learning Competencies.

ParentABLE is a web-based curriculum that includes, PowerPoint presentations, videos, interactive exercises, quizzes with feedback, note assists, and handouts. ParenTeach Institute also provides access to a teacher’s guide for all teachers. We are happy to announce we are now offering 6 CEU's through TeachIllinois.org for schools located in the state of Illinois for teachers who implement this course!

"Parenting education should be a required course in high school. I think it is essential for everybody whether or not you’re going to be a parent ..to understand how to treat children in a way that fosters their development."

Testimonials

"I like that we got to learn about parenting; I feel like schools don't really talk about this and expect us to already know about parenting, which we don't have a lot of knowledge of."

- Darrell F. a ParentABLE High School Student

"I think this is a great opportunity for people in general to grow and learn. Soon I hope parenting classes will be taught worldwide because too many kids suffer and are suffering from improper parenting techniques. I talked to my mom about it and she was all about it and realized she also made a few mistakes while parenting us. I love that we are doing this, this is so very important for literally the human race."

- Jenny P. a ParentABLE High School Student

"For me as a teacher, I’m totally sold on this program, and I think that my high school students are greatly benefiting by having this program in our school.”

- Kathy P. a ParentABLE High School Teacher
